A 51-year-old person sued alleging a wrong diagnosis led to his leg being amputated, according to a Sunday press release. The lawsuit against Wolfson Medical Center, led by attorney Ran Shapira from the law firm Almog-Shapira, shed light on a string of accused medical blunders that culminated in the loss of the patient's foot and profound psychological anguish. Due to excruciating foot pain as a result of a nail wound, the patient, a 51-year-old Holon resident, sought medical attention at Wolfson Medical Center in August 2017. Despite his and evident symptoms, the hospital staff reportedly mistakenly diagnosed him with diabetes, focusing their attention away from the true cause of his pain. In a statement describing the ordeal, Attorney Shapira explained, "The prolonged delay in diagnosing and treating his injury, during which he was released home twice, eventually led to the loss of his foot." This narrative occurred due to negligence and oversight, according to the lawsuit's allegations, which claimed that the hospital staff ignored the plaintiff's explicit complaints regarding his foot, choosing instead to focus on unrelated issues such as diabetes and kidney failure, despite the patient's lack of diabetic history. An ultrasound examination conducted at Sourasky Medical Center unearthed severe gangrene in the plaintiff's foot, requiring amputation. Despite efforts to salvage the damaged limb, partial amputation became an inevitable recourse. Dr. Jonathan Lahman, a vascular surgeon, viewed the events and stated, "Proper treatment and intervention during the patient's initial and following visits could have prevented amputation." Lahman's assessment highlighted Wolfson Medical Center's procedural shortcomings, according to the press release, notably the failure to execute essential tests and evaluations during the plaintiff's consultations. This oversight, according to Dr. Lahman, constituted gross medical misconduct. In the wake of the medical ordeal, the plaintiff confronted a plethora of permanent disabilities and psychological disorders, according to Dr. Sergio Marchesadski's psychiatric evaluation. Dr. Marchesadski emphasized the patient's battle with untreated chronic depression, sleep disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder, attributing these ailments to the events at Wolfson Medical Center. Attorney Shapira painted a picture of the plaintiff's pre and post-incident life in the press release, noting, "Before the incident, the plaintiff was independent and full of life ... Following the incident, he left home due to feeling overwhelmed and sank into depression, ceased working, and now lives alone." The lawsuit served as a beacon of justice, the press release stated, striving to hold Wolfson Medical Center accountable for the ramifications of its medical negligence. ...قراءة المزيد

In the six months since , the hospitals in Nahariya, Haifa, and Safed, alongside routine treatments, are preparing for extreme scenarios, which could break out at any moment, as a result of an escalation of tensions along Israel's northern border.  “We are ready,” these three hospitals say.  “We are preparing in case we don’t have any advance warning. It will be a surprise to everyone because confidentiality and secrecy are a priority,” Prof. Masad Barhoum, director of the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, a mere 10 kilometers from the border, told Walla on Thursday.  " and northern residents need to know that they have someone to trust. We have 775 beds. We have prepared our underground complex for almost seven months. Although we have never had anything like this before, this is the reality, and we don't have the privilege to ignore it, and we have to face it. My colleagues and I work day by day and hour by hour for this moment. We always knew it would happen, we just didn't know when. It's closer now than ever." "As soon as there is a , all hospitals in the State of Israel work as one," explains Prof. Barhoum. "There is a unified war room that refers every wounded person, and we can take in every wounded person who is referred to us. Of course, operating rooms are limited, and intensive care is also limited, but there are regulations for all of this. The war room will deal with moving the sick and wounded to where they need to be as we absorb and act accordingly. We will know how to treat any injured person who arrives. We are prepared for events with many casualties at a very large rate so that we will be able to optimize and prioritize our work and whatever changes need to be made. This is war.” Dr. Masad Barhoum, director of the Galilee Medical Center speaks at the International Multidisciplinary Conference in Regba, near the northern Israeli city of Nahariya October 3, 2018. (credit: MEIR VAKNIN/FLASH90) "Most of the wounded in the northern district in the last seven months came to us," says Barhoum. "The price paid by the hospital is only an economic price. The price paid by the community is just as significant and it is clear that the community here is affected. We are forced to cut back on elective surgeries. We must have a huge number of vacant beds for trauma and can only use 30-35% of them. Sometimes it goes a little beyond that, because I have no choice and I have nowhere to transfer, and all the time we do secondary regulation and transfer to other hospitals that can take some of them." "Our economic damage is massive, among other things, because during this period many women giving birth, premature babies, newborns do not come here, but go to a hospital in Haifa or even in central Israel, without hearing booms, interceptions, falls, planes, and sirens all the time. We live through this every day. Last year, with the intervention of Health Minister Uriel Busso, we were given up to the last shekel and our debt was closed. This year, I estimate that the deficit will be NIS 150-200 million, and we will have to use the Finance Ministry and the Health Ministry, and I believe that they will close our debt.” "We are not defined as a 'super' hospital, although we conduct ourselves as such. In recent years, we have strengthened ourselves greatly in departments such as surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and trauma. We went through the civil war in Syria when 70% of the wounded came to us from it, so we already have a lot of experience and knowledge in the treatment of war trauma. Unfortunately, but also happily, we know how to do it and implement it." The hospital has been in constant development in recent years, including the opening of new departments and the recruitment of a workforce that already numbers 3,300 men and women, among them Jews, Christians, Muslims, Druze and Bedouins, who treat the residents of the Galilee from all sectors and religions, a diverse multicultural mosaic.  The war that broke out on October 7 created a wave of shock and astonishment among these workers. The very next day, Barhoum called them together for a moment of silence at the helipad. "Our fate is tied to each other," he began, "this is the front that will win together with everyone."  Proximity to the border dictates additional challenges for personnel management, including about 500 workers who were evacuated from their homes and those whose spouses are in extended reserve service and on standby. Dozens of workers were summoned by Order 8 for reserve service, some immediately at the outbreak of the war and some at a later stage. "In addition, we have employees whose children were harmed in Gaza," he pointed out. "As a workplace, we accompany them, too, with hugs and love." Already on the day the war broke out, Prof. Barhoum instructed the teams to first lower the critical departments into the protected underground complex, including the preterm, dialysis, and oncology departments. The next day, he ordered more departments to be taken down, including surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, and maternity. Some of the departments, such as the ER, the delivery rooms, and the cardiology department, remained in their usual place because they are protected all year round. In addition, most of the operating rooms are also protected. The underground hospital of the Galilee Medical Center is the first of its kind in the country and was established before the Second Lebanon War at the initiative of the director of the hospital at the time, Prof. Shaul Shasha. Thanks to its establishment, lives were saved then, in 2006, after a missile directly hit the ophthalmology department, which was empty following the move to the underground complex.  "We are down, but the morale of the team is very high," said Barhoum. "Even the sick and wounded understand this. It is not easy. When I go through the wards, it is quiet, and I hear from hospitalized people praising the team, even though they say that the conditions are not comfortable. But this is war." On October 9, two days after the outbreak of the war, the first wounded arrived at the hospital from the northern border, from that fatal encounter with terrorists near Arab al-Aramshe, and since then they have not stopped flowing. While admitting the wounded throughout the last six months, the hospital wards are preparing for an escalation in the north. Since then, hundreds of wounded people have been treated at the hospital, most of them in mild and moderate condition. Recently, 19 were wounded from a combined explosion of anti-tank missiles and UAVs in Arab al-Aramshe and were brought to the medical institution. Unfortunately, the death of one of them was determined in the general intensive care department of the hospital. A short period of time after the start of the war, a second shock room was built in the emergency department, which allowed for the expansion of the reception of trauma victims, especially those wounded in war. Also, with the cooperation of the IDF, a second airstrip was built to accommodate helicopters carrying the wounded. The assessments encompass the entire hospital. For example, the critical equipment of the laboratory department, led by Dr. Mona Shahada and about a hundred employees who perform about 10 million laboratory tests a year, was moved to protected premises. Dr. Shahada emphasizes that a medical diagnosis is not possible without laboratory results: "About 70 percent of medical decisions rely on the results of laboratory tests." The functioning of the blood bank laboratory, under the leadership of Dr. Moran Zarfati, has been especially critical since the outbreak of the war. "In accordance with the requirement of the Health Ministry, we will significantly increase the existing stock of blood units in the hospital," said Dr. Shahada and Dr. Zarfati.  "In addition, the doses of blood will be increased, with the cooperation of the army, so that the wounded in the field can be treated optimally. Medical experience proves that a whole blood transfusion gives a higher chance of saving the life of a wounded person who is losing a lot of blood, much more than the transfusions given in the past." In preparation for possible war on the northern front, the emergency control system was characterized by a unique blood bank module, which is connected to the computerized systems. The module is automatically updated and gives a detailed picture in real time of the stock of blood units of its various types. In addition, throughout the period, the hospital has been preparing for cyber attack scenarios, which may paralyze the computer systems and cause a transition to manual work. The Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa is the only medical center defined as a medical "super" center in the north - also in the field of trauma, and according to its management, the only one in the north with the ability to provide medical treatment for a multi-casualty event in all the medical departments needed in this type of event. The medical center was trained two weeks ago by the Home Front Command for exactly this type of scenario - a missile strike with the arrival of 100 casualties at the same time. Rambam's emergency system is able to treat 11 seriously injured people at the same time. The emergency room was used to the immediate evacuation of "regular" patients to the wards in order to receive dozens of wounded. Ramban built a unique hybrid facility through lessons learned from the Second Lebanon War, including a huge underground parking lot that can be transformed into a protected underground hospital in just a few hours with the capacity to receive up to 1,700 patients and casualties. The last exercise saw one floor used to treat the lightly wounded.  Prof. Mickey Halbertal, director of the Rambam, told Walla: "We hope to soon return to the routine of medical treatment and research - what we are meant to do for the benefit of the community, but we are also ready at any time for extreme events and practice our preparedness regularly. Rambam is a very experienced and very active trauma center, 365 days a year and if we need to. I can assure the population of the north that we will meet any task to save lives." The Ziv Medical Center in Safed has also stated its preparedness. The strategic importance of the hospital, which has 330 hospitalization beds, together with its advanced level of medicine, led the Health Minister to declare Ziv a "super center." The meaning of the decision is that, starting last December, the medical institution is in the midst of a vigorous process of becoming a trauma center, with new neurosurgery and thoracic surgery units, which join the existing services, and allow the reception and treatment of head and chest trauma injuries and, of course, complex injuries. As part of learning the lessons from the Second Lebanon War, it was decided, among other things, to strengthen the hospital's trauma system, the hospital underwent a comprehensive renovation in recent years, as part of which all the departments were upgraded, including the emergency medicine department. It still does not have an underground hospital, but in the meantime, according to estimates, 250-300 beds are already placed in protected spaces. Ziv is of special strategic importance due to the short distance from the scene of the battles in Lebanon or the Golan Heights, and the medical center is constantly being attended by wounded by airlift to the designated airstrip. Since the beginning of the war, about 220 soldiers and civilians have been treated at the Ziv Medical Center, which makes it one of the leading medical centers in the reception and treatment of battle casualties in the north. "Since October, we have been in emergency preparedness and have not neglected routine treatments for a moment. Ziv is prepared for scenarios in the north with great support from the Health Ministry and mainly based on the excellent, professional and trained staff," Prof. Salman Zarka, director of the medical center, told Walla. "We will continue to balance war preparedness along with professional medical response to all the residents of the north and the security forces. We witnessed how the south of the country and the surrounding area, as well as the Galilee and the Golan, are Israel's protective layer - and therefore it is important to continue to strengthen these areas." ...قراءة المزيد

Iran launched toward Israel late Saturday night, April 13, in its first direct attack on the Jewish state. According to IDF Spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, 99 percent of the projectiles fired – 170 explosive UAVs, 30 cruise missiles and 120 ballistic missiles – were shot down by the Israeli Air Force and Israeli allies outside the country’s borders, causing only minor damage to an IAF base in southern Israel. “This is a very significant strategic achievement,” he said. “The Iranian threat met the aerial and technological superiority of the IDF, combined with a strong fighting coalition, which together intercepted the vast majority of the threats.” Hagari said no drones or cruise missiles had succeeded in entering Israeli airspace, but a ballistic missile landed in a Bedouin village near Arad in southern Israel, seriously wounding a seven-year-old girl. She was hospitalized in intensive care at Soroka Medical Center. After more than six months of , which the IDF launched after the Hamas assault on October 7, the Iranian attack threatened to escalate into a regional war between the two arch-foes, Iran (and its proxies) and Israel (with the backing of its main ally, the United States). Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened the War Cabinet and the Security Cabinet at defense headquarters in Tel Aviv to consider Israel’s response.  The Security Cabinet empowered Netanyahu, , and Minister-without-Portfolio Benny Gantz to make decisions on taking further action against Iran. Channel 12 cited an unnamed Israeli official as saying there would be a “significant response” to the Iranian attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convenes the War Cabinet in Tel Aviv to discuss Israel’s response to the Iranian attack. (credit: GPO) “Citizens of Israel, in recent years, and especially in recent weeks, Israel has been preparing for a direct attack by Iran,” Netanyahu said in a video statement just before the Iranian attack. “Our defensive systems are deployed; we are ready for any scenario, both defensively and offensively. The State of Israel is strong. The IDF is strong. The public is strong. “We appreciate the US standing alongside Israel, as well as the support of Britain, France and many other countries. We have determined a clear principle: Whoever harms us, we will harm them. We will defend ourselves against any threat and will do so level-headedly and with determination.” Sirens began blaring in Israel at about 1:40 a.m. on April 14, sending people across the country – including Jerusalem – to bomb shelters and safe rooms. In addition, Hezbollah fired dozens of Katyusha rockets and drones at northern Israel from Lebanon. An IDF reservist was seriously wounded in a drone attack on Kibbutz Hanita, while a rocket caused heavy damage to property in Katzrin. Drones were also launched against Israel by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group. Almost all interceptions of the Iranian drones and missiles were made by aircraft, David’s Sling, and the Arrow missile systems, the IDF said. Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 systems were able to accurately intercept the incoming long-range ballistic missiles. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) congratulated the IDF, saying: “This unequaled degree of performance was achieved thanks to the multilayered defense systems developed by Israel’s defense industries.” Israel, the US, the UK, Jordan, and France intercepted drones and missiles over Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Israel, according to foreign reports. US and British warplanes shot down some Israel-bound drones over the Iraq-Syria border area, Channel 12 reported. Jordanian jets also shot down dozens of Iranian drones, some of them headed toward Jerusalem, security sources told Reuters. Gallant issued a statement on April 14 saying he had completed an operational situation assessment with senior officials in Israel’s defense establishment.“Overnight, the whole world saw the true face of Iran – a terrorist state that attacked the State of Israel from a distance of 1,500 km and in doing so also attempted to employ all of its proxies. On the other hand, the world also saw the power of a coalition, and how Israel, together with the United States and additional partners, stood together and thwarted this attack in a way that is unparalleled,” Gallant said. However, he cautioned: “The campaign is not over yet – we must remain alert and attentive to the instructions published by the IDF and Home Front Command. We must be prepared for every scenario. Having said this, we have thwarted the most significant wave [of the attack], and we did so successfully.” Iran’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had conducted a missile and drone attack against “military bases” in Israel. “Iran, if necessary, will not hesitate to take further defensive measures to safeguard its legitimate interests against any military aggressions and unlawful use of force,” it said, adding that Iran had conducted the attack in retaliation for the Israeli strike on its embassy in Damascus on April 1, in which seven senior officers, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Mohammad Reza Zahedi, were killed. Israel had been put on high alert for an Iranian response to the Damascus strike after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatened that it “must be punished and will be.” Iran’s Mission to the UN said at 1:06 a.m. local time that the attack on Israel “can be deemed concluded.” However, it warned, “should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe. It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime, from which the US must stay away.” On the morning of April 13, the IRGC announced that it had seized a Portuguese-flagged cargo ship, which was partially Israeli-owned, near the Strait of Hormuz. Following the incident, Foreign Minister Israel Katz called on the European Union and the free world to designate the IRGC a terrorist organization and impose new sanctions on Iran. In a 30-minute phone call with Netanyahu, US President Joe Biden said that “Israel demonstrated a remarkable capacity to defend and defeat even unprecedented attacks, sending a clear message to its foes that they cannot effectively threaten the security of Israel.” Biden cut short a weekend visit to his home state of Delaware and returned to Washington to meet with his national security advisers, including his secretaries of defense and state, in the White House Situation Room, and pledged to stand with Israel. “Our commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad,” Biden posted on X. Biden said that in the week before the Iranian attack, he had directed the US military to move aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region. “Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our servicemembers, we helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles,” he said. The US president also promised to convene leaders of the G7 to coordinate a “united diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack.” “My team will engage with their counterparts across the region. And we will stay in close touch with Israel’s leaders. And while we have not seen attacks on our forces or facilities today, we will remain vigilant to all threats and will not hesitate to take all necessary action to protect our people,” he said. According to CNN, Biden told Netanyahu that the US would not take part in any offensive operation against Iran, saying that Israel should consider the success in intercepting the Iranian missiles a “win.” US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said although Washington did not seek a conflict with Iran, it would not hesitate to act to protect US forces and support the defense of Israel.  In a phone call with Gallant, Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder said Austin reiterated “ironclad US support for Israel’s defense in the face of growing threats from Iran and its regional proxies.” Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council was set to convene after Israel requested that it condemn Iran’s attack and designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization.  UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres squarely condemned Iran’s attack against Israel, saying he was “deeply alarmed about the very real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation.” The European Union, Britain, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway and others also issued condemnations of Iran’s attack against Israel. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak denounced Iran’s “reckless” attack. “These strikes risk inflaming tensions and destabilizing the region. Iran has once again demonstrated that it is intent on sowing chaos in its own backyard,” Sunak said in a statement. “The UK will continue to stand up for Israel’s security and that of all our regional partners, including Jordan and Iraq.” World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said Iran’s attack “not only threatens the safety and security of Israeli citizens but also represents a dangerous escalation in the already volatile Middle East region.” “Iran’s actions, as the primary state sponsor of terrorism, pose a grave threat to global stability,” Lauder said. “This egregious act of aggression undermines efforts for peace and will ignite a tinderbox, unleashing further violence with potentially devastating impacts on countless innocent lives.” President Isaac Herzog issued a statement on X blessing Israel’s soldiers, the commanders of the IDF and the IAF, as well as the coalition of nations led by the US and its president.  “Bless my sisters and brothers, the people of Israel, for their exceptional show of resilience,” he added. “Together the forces of good will overcome the forces of evil. Am Yisrael Chai!”■ ...قراءة المزيد

Following an on Israel, a 7-year-old Arab Israeli girl was seriously wounded by shrapnel falling on her home in a Bedouin community near Arad. Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedics provided initial treatment for the girl, then transferring her to the Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheba for further treatment. "Near the entrance to Arad, we reached a private vehicle from the Bedouin community. In the back was a half-conscious girl with a shrapnel wound to the head. We gave her vital care and evacuated her to hospital in a serious condition," Zohar Sarbinski, a MDA paramedic, described. Soroka later updated that the wounded girl had been transferred to the operating theater, and then admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. In addition, MDA teams were dispatched to treat about 20 people who suffered from anxiety and were slightly injured on the way to protected areas. Iran had launched over 300 projectiles toward Israel, including drones and ballistic missiles, of which were intercepted by the Israeli military and its allies in the region. Former hostage and her three children were transported to a new prison in Gaza wrapped in white sheets via ambulance, Brodutch said in an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail’s Sabrina Miller published on Friday. Recounting her experience, Brodutch said that she had awoken on October 7 in her home, located in Kibbutz Kfar Azza, to find her knocking at her door while drenched in the blood of her parents.  “It wasn't her blood, it was her parents' blood,” Hagar explained to the Mail. ‘She saw how terrorists, dressed in military uniforms, killed her mother. “Her father picked her up and tried to run away with her brothers. But they killed him, too. She was in his arms when they killed him, and he fell on top of her. They let her go, and she ran to our house.” Avigail Idan was placed in a safe room alongside Brodutch’s three children while her husband, Avichai, attempted to protect the kibbutz in his capacity as the community’s security guard.  ORIA BROCUTCH, 4; Yuval Broduct 8, and Ofri Brodutch, 10, reunite with their pet dog, Rodney, following their release from Gaza this week. (credit: Schneider Children’s Medical Center/Reuters) Left alone with Idan, her ten-year-old, nine-year-old, and 4-year-old, Brodutch spent four hours hiding in the family’s safe room before 14 armed Hamas terrorists broke into her house and kidnapped all five of them. “It's only kids! It's only kids! Please don't do anything!” Brodutch begged her abductors in Arabic. (credit: Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel/Handout via REUTERS) Describing being driven away from the kibbutz, Brodutch said, ‘As we left Kfar Aza, I saw lots of houses burning. Dead bodies were piled in the fields and scattered on the ground. “One of the terrorists told me: 'This is not Kfar Aza anymore. It is Kfar Moot' - which translates as 'the village of death.' And seeing this destruction, I believed him.” Brodutch described the thousands of Gazans celebrating in the street as the terrorists announced they had kidnapped an Israeli girl. “The terrorists opened the car doors and pulled my hair [to show me off] to the thousands of people in the streets. Then they grabbed my daughter by her shirt and showed her off to the crowd. They were boasting that they had stolen a little Israeli girl. All the people were cheering,” she recounted. The family and three-year-old Idan were held captive in the home of a Palestinian family. Product said she was locked in a dark 12 square meter room with another Israeli hostage, where they were barely fed and forced to sleep on dirty mattresses lining the floors. “There was no running water, no electricity. They gave us two notebooks and a few pencils, but we weren't allowed a sharpener,” she said. I” thought that nobody cared about me. And that Avichai – my husband – was dead,' she explained. “I thought that Israel had forgotten about us. “We were in Gaza for 51 days. A woman and four kids. On the first day, I believed that Israel would do whatever it took to come and rescue us straightaway. I never thought they would bomb Gaza with the hostages still inside. “We weren't allowed to cry or scream or make any noise. We had to whisper all the time. It was a nightmare trying to keep them quiet.” Brodutch said that the sound of airstrikes hitting new buildings filled her with fear, and she was concerned that she would be injured and unable to protect her children. After only 12 days in captivity, the house that Brodutch and her children were imprisoned in was hit during an airstrike. The family all survived but were quickly transported to new holdings.  Brodutch told the Mail, and they were forced into white sheets so they would not be recognized and transported to a new prison via ambulance.  She said the new prison had once been a room for a young girl. It had a child's bed, a cupboard full of small clothes, and some toys and games. Despite this, she said the conditions were significantly worse in her new prison compared to the previous one. “Every day, we got less and less food. We were starving. The kids were starving. They were fighting with each other for crumbs and scraps on the floor. I would give them most of my food and eat a little bit just to survive,” she recounted. “Even though there was a little girl's bed in the room, no one wanted to sleep on it. The kids wanted to sleep in a huddle next to me on the floor all the time. They were terrified.” Brodutch said that she tried to avoid speaking with the few captors who spoke English, afraid that she would say something that would cost them their lives. Leading up to their release, they were again moved after 51 days in captivity. The new prison housed another hostage, but the family was forbidden from speaking. “Me and the other hostage. We tried to whisper to understand what was going on, but every time they caught us, they were very angry, and they would scream at us,” she said. On the day they were finally released, Brodutch was forced into a hijab and driven to a rendezvous point where they met with other hostages to be released. “As we were arriving at a drop-off spot, my neighbor [from Kfar Aza] saw me from a few meters [away], and she just started screaming, she said. “We weren't allowed to scream anytime, but she saw me and screamed: 'Hagar, Avichai is waiting for you. I heard him on the radio.’ “I never cried in Gaza. I couldn't feel anything. I was empty the entire time. But when I saw my friend and neighbor, and I heard Avichai was alive, I erupted into tears.” Being driven to the Red Cross, Brodutch described thousands of Gazans lining the streets to intimidate the family.  “You think 50 meters is a short distance? It isn't,” she explained. “It is a really long distance when you have to walk 50 meters past a screaming, cheering crowd jumping at you and trying to grab you. It was completely terrifying. “And the entire time we were driving through the streets of Gaza, people in the streets were shouting at us and jumping on the car.” Brodutch said her children have not recovered from the trauma. “The children look the same, but they are not the same,” she described. “Our four-year-old Oriya just can't be separated from me. He is with me all the time. Yuval, who is eight, has just started back at school for a few hours daily. Ofri – the big one – has nightmares. She is afraid of terrorists all the time. She is petrified by every little sound. “It's not just that we were kidnapped and all the hell we've been through there. Also, our community was destroyed, and lots of my friends are dead.” Finishing the interview, Brodutch insisted that the release of hostages must be the government’s number 1 priority.  “All the remaining hostages should come back home right now,' she said. “No matter what. “The hostages are ordinary people taken from their beds. They should be back home right now. There are still two babies in Gaza – Kfir and Ariel Bibas – they should be home now.” ...قراءة المزيد

Light rail construction and digging in Tel Aviv may have resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of patients with Murine (flea-borne) typhus. Large numbers of rats and mice have emerged from underground and have started to roam the streets, which historically can lead to a rise in illness. According to data from Holon's , between 2016 and 2021 only a single case of this disease was recorded. In 2022 and 2023, the years the construction began in the area, 16 cases were recorded. Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv (Ichilov) also noted a similar trend and reported that in the past year and a half, there have been at least four cases of illness that are likely caused by rats and mice. Dr. Yael Paran, a specialist in internal medicine and infectious diseases at Ichilov, explained that this is a significant increase in cases. In the past, there may have been years without any cases at all, and sometimes only one case in a given year. Paran told Walla, "I assume that what we see in the hospital are just severe cases. This is a disease with a wide spectrum - from asymptomatic carriers, to a fever that can pass by itself, to a severe disease that can lead to hospitalization. I am convinced there are cases that resolve on their own or after treatment without a diagnosis being made." Paran clarified that "The important thing is that doctors take the disease seriously, as there is a significant rise in cases in Tel Aviv and Bnei Brak. They must administer the appropriate tests to promptly diagnose it. In addition, the Health Ministry and local authorities should also make efforts to control the outbreak." The Tel Aviv light rail (credit: AVSHALOM SASSONI) At Wolfson Medical Center, a connection was indeed found between the work shifts of the light rail and the patients admitted. "In the past two years, 16 patients arrived at the hospital, while five years earlier only one case was recorded. It is not a matter of attention or specific tests, but suddenly the disease has become common and there has been a dramatic increase," explained Prof. Yasmin Maor, head of the Infectious Diseases Unit at Wolfson Medical Center. "In terms of severity, not all patients who arrived at the hospital were critically ill, but some of them required intensive care. There are a lot of fleas in the Tel Aviv, Holon, and Bat Yam areas. And I know that even in , there has been an increase in cases. Therefore, we asked ourselves what changed in this period. "Dr. Iris Zohar, a senior doctor in the Infectious Diseases Unit, suggested a connection to the construction of the light rail. We saw that people with this disease live close to the railway construction sites. This is not a definitive proof, but it is a reasonable correlation. "According to her, half of the people who arrived with the disease at the hospital reported that they had direct or indirect contact with fleas or mice, seen in the house or in the yard, and half of them did not. This is a reasonable correlation because some of the fleas move to the grass and jump on people who pass by. "We also know that fleas transmit like the bubonic plague, and there are cases of people being bitten by fleas, so there is no doubt that efforts to control and reduce the number of fleas need to be increased," Paran concluded. Murine typhus is a bacterial disease caused by bacteria from the Rickettsia family that is transmitted to humans by insects, mainly through flea or mite bites. Infection happens when a mite or flea sucks the blood of an infected animal, and then when it sucks a person's blood, it transmits the bacteria to them and infects them. The symptoms of the disease range from a mild illness that passes without treatment, to a severe illness that can lead to complications such as systemic damage and even death. The main symptoms are a combination of high fever, headaches, and after a few days, the appearance of a rash that appears on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. Symptoms of the disease can appear a few weeks after the bite, making it difficult to identify the connection between the bite and the disease. Diagnosis is based on a combination of symptoms and blood tests. When there is a high clinical suspicion, antibiotic treatment must be given automatically to prevent complications. Treatment for the disease is relatively simple and includes antibiotics, usually doxycycline. It is used to treat infections caused by bacteria and other microorganisms. ...قراءة المزيد

The Health and Finance Ministries, as well as the Knesset Health Committee, support a significant increase in the health tax that Israelis pay every month.  Health insurance tax is levied at 3.1% on the first NIS 7,522 and at 5% on the difference between that figure and the ceiling calculated for monthly income at NIS 49,030. If approved, the increase to 3.25% and 5.15% respectively will go into effect at the beginning of 2025, but committee approval will make it possible to allocate a dedicated budget for the mental health system next year. The increase will mean NIS 1 billion more for psychiatric care.Committee chairman Shas MK Yoni Mashriki said that the increase must not come at the expense of the state’s participation in the Basket of Health Services. “We will make sure that this budgetary addition from the tax increase will indeed reach the needs of mental health.”  He demanded that the two ministries submit an orderly plan on how the NIS 1 billion that to be added will indeed be dedicated to the mental health system. According to Prof. Gabi Bin Nun, a senior health economist in the health systems management department at Ben-Gurion University (BGU) of the Negev in Beersheba, in light of the fact that health fund premiums constitute a dedicated tax for healthcare, the expectation is that when this tax rises, the public will receive more through expanding the basket of services required by.  However, he added that according to the wording in the proposed legislation, the increase in income from the increase in health insurance premiums is offset by a reduction in the participation of the state budget, so that the total sources of the law as well as the rights of the residents do not change. In addition, due to the salary ceiling required for health insurance, the tax increase is regressive and harmed the poor. He wondered why another, more progressive tax source such as the income tax was not selected as a source of financing the huge costs of the Gaza war. Health Ministry director-general Moshe Bar Siman Tov told the committee that with the difficult reality after the brutal Hamas attack on October 7, the war, and need to prepare for the battles in the north, a dedicated budget was needed for the emotional health of the victims and their families, the evacuees and their families, and rescue forces. He detailed the mental and physical rehabilitation plan that his ministry is preparing that will be launched at Hadassah Medical Center on Mount Scopus and Poriya (Padeh) Medical Center in Tiberias. He also discussed preparations for protecting Israel’s hospitals against hostile cyberattacks and for treating evacuees and those returning to their homes.  Daniel Padon, the welfare and social security liaison in the Treasury’s budget division, said that the NIS 1 billion increase from the health tax rise earmarked for the psychiatric system. Yael Lindenberg, the health liaison, added that the increase will allow an immediate boost to the expansion of the mental health system in hospitals, the health funds and public associations dealing with this, including the recruitment of psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers. Dr. Yitzhak Berlovich, a former Health Ministry deputy director-general and now at the Association for the Rights of the Patient, emphasized that at the time the 1999 cancellation of the parallel (employers’) tax by then-finance minister Benjamin Netanyahu was finance minister was accompanied by a government promise to supplement the income from the tax - to finance the health basket. “As the income increases, the tax should be higher, and not create a tax ceiling,” he declared.  Nir Kedar, director-general of the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Jerusalem, maintained that the more Israelis earn, the less they pay in health taxes and called for more tax brackets, to change the tax ceiling and to increase the state’s participation. ...قراءة المزيد
